The Department of Electrical Engineering emphasizes solid state and physical electronics, surface physics, thin films, sputtering, noise and fluctuation phenomena, quantum electronics, plasma physics, automation, power systems and power electronics theory, wave propagation, communication systems and theory, optics, lasers, fiber optics, magnetism, semiconductor properties and devices, VLSI and WSI engineering in theory and practice, network theory, signal and image processing, and computer and systems engineering.
The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) degree can be earned via Plan A: Thesis option or Plan C: Coursework Only option. The MSEE Plan A degree includes a total of 20 course credits and 10 thesis credits; the MSEE Plan C degree includes a total of 30 course credits, with the requirement that students complete independent research, a written report, and an oral presentation as part of their course plan.
Online courses for this program are offered through the College of Science and Engineering’s UNITE Distributed Learning office. Please note that some synchronous events (exams, quizzes, presentations) may be required, depending on course or instructor.
UNITE Student and Faculty Engagement will coordinate and verify local proctors for exams and quizzes for students so that you do not have to travel to campus.
Students may combine courses taken through UNITE with on-campus courses toward their degree, if desired.

Enroll in classes through UNITE Faculty and Student Services, not the University's One Stop registration site. The UNITE sections of courses appear as "closed" sections in the One Stop system. UNITE is an educational unit with the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
